Episode Transcript:
Katie (00:01):
Hi everyone. Thank you for tuning into the Hustlenomics podcast. I’m your host, Katie. And today I am so excited to be talking with Marla Goldberg. She is an energy healer, intuitive speaker teacher, host of the guided spirit conversations podcast and bestselling author of my effing long journey to loving myself a guide to a shorter path. So Marla, thank you so much for coming on the show today.
Marla (00:22):
Thank you, Katie. I’m so happy to be here. I’m so glad
Katie (00:26):
I would love to learn a little bit more about you, your background, and a little bit about how you got to where you are today.
Marla (00:32):
Okay. Well, my background starts a long time ago with my first business, which happened when I was in my, when I was 30. I started my first business, which was an event management company and I produced corporate events nationwide. And I did that for 11 years. And in the middle of that, I started a candy manufacturing company like traveling the world. Wasn’t, you know, the United States wasn’t hard enough. I had to do something to add to it. And I produced it started with English toffee and I devised a line that I named the heavenly confection collection little did I know that years later I would be an energy healer intuitive and doing all the things that I’m doing today. And I’ll just shorten it that near shore it up a little bit. I’ve had this, my business that I’m in today is my fifth and that would be my practice and my, my writing and my speaking hand by podcast, amazing
Katie (01:31):
Five businesses. That is incredible. So it sounds like you’re a serial entrepreneur, which I can totally relate to something. I always love asking people who have started many successful businesses. Is there something that you’ve learned over your years, starting different businesses that you wish you had known, you know, as a younger self, what you would tell her that you’ve learned over the years?
Marla (01:53):
Yes. First of all, what I would tell her is that, you know, don’t think about failure because nothing has failure. Everything is a stepping stone to growth because a lot of people don’t go into business because they’re worried about failing. They’re worried about, you know, making somebody else’s self-fulfilled property prophecy or projected prophecy. True. And here’s the thing. If you don’t start it, you won’t know if you don’t go forward in starting a business, whatever makes your heart sing, then how do you know if you’re going to make it or not? I mean, what if you really become the next Jeff Bezos or back in the day, Debbie fields was, you know, the cookie queen, you just don’t know what you don’t know. So my feeling is, you know, go for the breasts ring and just do the best you can do and ask for help. That’s the other thing don’t be afraid. Don’t let your ego get in the way to think that you are, that you can’t ask for help because there’s so much help out there. Even if it’s a YouTube video that you can get to help support whatever might be going on in your world. I love that. Be bold, go for
Katie (03:00):
It. And don’t be afraid to ask for help, fantastic advice for anybody, you know, any part of their journey. And so you and your bio, I read that you’re an energy healer and intuitive. So I don’t know if everybody listening knows kind of what that means. So do you mind kind of explaining what those mean and kind of what you do?
Marla (03:19):
No, I don’t mind at all. Of course I’ll share everything. I’m an open book, literally. So an energy healer, people who work with energy, everything is made up of energy. Use it. The chair you’re sitting on the table in front of you are all components, it’s all vibration. It just depends on how fast or slow the frequency is. And we as human beings, you know, sometimes come in with blocks and interferences or issues. Sometimes they’re health. Sometimes they’re emotional and there’s ways that people can work at shifting what’s going on energetically to open the flow, to help heal or to help facilitate your healing. Cause a lot of times it’s a partnership. You know, he learned client because there’s usually things that the client really needs to do to help support what the healer is doing. And so everybody has heard about Reiki. Reiki is now like the mainstream energy flowing modality, and it was started in Japan and it’s about moving energy.
Marla (04:21):
And sometimes people, if they’re in pain, they feel re, you know, the pain go away. Or if they’re really tense and stress, they feel themselves relaxed for the first time in a very, very long time. And so there are many, many modalities in the modalities, depending on what’s going on with you and what works for you. But here’s one thing I can share about energy healers. We’re all trying to get our clients to what I call the sweet spot of life. And the sweet spot of life is your flow, your, your feeling of happiness, joy, you feeling like you’re in that groove of life. And so that’s what I am. I I’ve been,uI stepped into the energy healing foray and back in 2003, and I never thought I’d be doing this for other people until spirit gave me a very loud message, uto start a practice and help people, which I, I listened to and I’ve continued taking classes. So, you know, I’m trained in 24 modalities and what my goal is to help people help facilitate them either shifting, tweaking, or actually just enhancing what their life experiences too.
Katie (05:34):
Interesting. I’m so fascinated by that. So what got you interested in this field in the first place?
Marla (05:40):
Kind of like most energy healers many of us have had to go through really challenging times and hit rock bottom before something, you know, brought us through what I call the one way door of a journey down this path. The one way path, because you go down, you never turn back. And I was going through a horrible marriage, first marriage, and I was depressed. I didn’t know what to do. I felt like a deer in headlights, you know, and how to move forward in my life because I was so stuck and I went to a woman’s conference and I went to a speaker who was talking about how to heal yourself. And I heard a little voice in my head say, you need to go there because nothing else is working. You need to listen. Nothing else is working. And that little voice pushed me into starting her school, which was my first mystery school where I learned 14 energy healing modalities.
Katie (06:34):
Interesting. Yeah. See, I’ve never heard of the like going into a focus mastery school, I guess is what’s on your bio. So that’s so interesting. And I’d love to kind of hear about what your journey was like with this specific business. I’m sure it’s been different for, for each one, but when you decided to start this business, what were some of the first steps that you took?
Marla (06:53):
Well, the first step was having the conversation with my husband because I talked about that big, booming voice. I was sound asleep. I was on a trip with my husband and this big, deep, booming voice was like yelling at me. You need to start a practice and you need to start helping people. And I thought it was my husband. Not that he would even say anything like that to me, but I couldn’t imagine where this voice was coming from. And I got up and I woke him up and it’s like, what did you just say to me? And after we both got the, you know, mr. Sandman out of our eyes, we started talking about it and I said, this is what came through. And he said, well, maybe you need to do this part time. So I started to ease into it because I call myself a reticent healer.
Marla (07:36):
And that is, you know, I had the skills that I just wasn’t ready to go out to and move forward in it. And this voice was pushing me from my comfort zone. And when I started, I just thought I’d be working on clients and building a client practice. And that was it. And I found that it wasn’t, it wasn’t what I thought it was. And so I started going to a mastermind and, and here’s the thing. There are different energy fields in different areas of the United States and every area of the world. So for example, you can find the West coast very open energetically, and there’s a lightness even on the East coast, but in Illinois where I was Chicago, there’s a really dense kind of energy. It’s more of a Midwestern sensibility kind of thing, and it’s not open. And so, you know, I’m doing all the marketing things that I did with my other business and I’m giving away free sessions and I, and I’m just not getting the trajectory I’m looking for.
Marla (08:37):
So I go to this mastermind and after a period of time attending the mastermind, I went to one of the facilitators who was also a business coach. And I said, let’s talk. And we had a conversation and I was telling her what was going on with my business. And she looked me and cause I was getting all these offers through the internet, but I was always very skeptical and cynical about what was coming through and was this real, or was I going to be, you know, what was it a scam? What was going on? And I started telling her about it and she goes, Oh my God. She goes, I haven’t heard of anybody having as many opportunities as you. And you’ve turned them all down. And there was at the end of 2017. And I decided that 2018 was going to be my year of yes.
Marla (09:24):
And so I said yes to, to writing into, in participating in two compilation books, then I said yes, to writing my book, which I never thought I’d ever write. Cause I five psychic said, you’re going to write a book. And I said, who’s going to want to hear what I have to say. Well, here I am. And so my solo book, my effing long journey to loving myself is that Mim part, second part memoir and part self-help. And what I’ve done is through my journey, which has, it was very rich in many opportunities for growth. I would put in before I learned all these tools and techniques. This is what I would have used to get me out of these situations or help me work through these situations. And then of course, after I learned the techniques, this is what I did use. I actually, you know, use all the techniques in the book and I used them to help transform my life, which it did.
Marla (10:20):
And yeah, and that’s how this whole thing started. So now all of a sudden I’m doing metaphysical tour, Tura cruises and I’m writing this book and I started my podcast and I was always a behind the scene person, not in front of the same person. So now I’ve got that. And all of a sudden, you know, I’m designing tools to be used with my books. So I have a screen pillow. My journal it’s called my sacred journal is just coming out as just being published. I, I dog gathered some colleagues and we’re finishing up on a global consciousness. Summit is the name which is going to be released. And again, aside of that, we’re opening, we’re starting or launching. I should say that GOLDOC, the global consciousness development circle. And that circle is an education, inspiration and motivational platform where we’ll have various people. Teaching courses, we’ll have movies, people can download and rent. We’ll have blogs via blogs, live meditations, recorded meditations. And we’ll just have a nominal membership fee for access to this site.
Katie (11:41):
That’s amazing. It sounds like you’re offering up so many fantastic resources that people can access. And I’m curious, do you work with many entrepreneurs?
Marla (11:49):
I, yes, because every healer is an entrepreneur. Everybody who I interview in my podcast is an entrepreneur and they’re all trying to maneuver this. And the important thing that I think that anybody should know is that you don’t have to look at everything as competition. If somebody is doing the same thing as you, they’re doing it in their own way. So there’s really not competition. People can support each other though. They might be doing the same thing or same type of thing.
Katie (12:21):
Yes. I love that perspective. I could not agree more. And so when you’re working with entrepreneurs, I’m curious, are there certain blocks or certain problems or issues that you see keep coming up again and again and again, and maybe what are those and how are you helping people work through them?
Marla (12:38):
So a big one is fear. The fear of moving forward, a fear of taking chances of taking steps. Uand here’s the thing. The fear is your, you know, fear is just something you’re afraid of that hasn’t even happened yet. So if you’re afraid that you’re going to fail, well, you’re going to fail just because you’re hanging on to the fear that you’re going to fail. So you might as well go through, take the leap of faith. And like I said, there’s no, nothing, no such thing as failure, everything is a stepping stone to expansion and growth. So hopefully you pay attention to what you’re doing and you learn from it. And even if you want to do a project and it doesn’t come off as you, like, you go back to the drawing board and you tweak it because hopefully, you know where your weak spots are, that need to be hoisted up to be shored up.
Katie (13:30):
Right. Right. Exactly.
Marla (13:32):
So that’s, that’s a big one fear. And then the other is judgment. Other people’s projected judgment on the entrepreneurs that want to be entrepreneur or the startup entrepreneur, because people just can’t wait to say, I told yourself and I get it goes through. These people are not in your shoes. Don’t allow them to be in your head. They don’t pay rent to be there. And so it’s getting people to realize their own personal power, their own personal strength, and to teach them how to step into their power and into their strength.
Katie (14:09):
So important. Yeah. That’s so important. I’d love to hear about the process of, of writing your book. You have a couple out, correct?
Marla (14:15):
I have three compilations and I’ve got myself a book. So the compilations are relatively easy. They give you a topic and you write about the topic, but the solo book, that was an interesting process for me. Because again, I didn’t think I would write a book and I couldn’t understand what I was. You know, why anybody would want to read it. But what I did is I went out of town for a month and I sequestered myself. And after, you know, I kinda got adjusted. I started meditating. And what I started to do was a technique called automatic writing. And what that is is you get quiet. You clear your mind and when you’re ready and you get back into your body and you open up, you know, your eyes, you take your I’m a pen and paper person, rather than typing. Some people might just start typing on their computers or laptops, but I do it longhand.
Marla (15:09):
And I just write and write and write. And you don’t think, you don’t think about what you’re writing. You don’t pay attention to you just write and you don’t judge. And I did this for weeks and then my time was up and I was coming back up North and I started reading what my, what I was writing and what I was writing was my life. And all the many, many, many, many decisions I made that didn’t serve me. And then I kept hearing voices in my head, my guidance telling me how to tweak my book. And so they’re the ones who said, you need to put, you know, tools in the bag. You need to help people, show them how to do it, give them something and show them, tell them how to use the tools. And then I had another voice. Tell me, you incorporate these tools into your story.
Marla (15:55):
And that’s how everything came to be, where I started sharing, how you know, when I was 20 and was going through this major breakup in my life, what tools I would have used if I had them, if I was taught them when I was younger and then what tools I used for this incident. And then when I learned the tools, what I actually used to work in PR work through a process things. And so that’s how the book came about and that’s the process. And it was I think I finished it in seven months.
Katie (16:29):
Wow. That’s amazing. That’s amazing. Would you mind sharing maybe one or two of those tools as like a little teaser for the listeners to hear? Not at all. So what, so they’re awesome.
Marla (16:40):
They’re all. I like all the tools, but a lot of us are repressors and I was a major repressor. I repressed my emotions. I didn’t want to deal with it. I didn’t want to deal with hurt my pain, my disappointment, my wounds. So I would just push them down and move on. And if you want to know what a repressor is, watch gone with the wind Scarlet O’Hara was a great professor and she’d stand on the mountain and say, as God is my witness, I will never do this again. And move on with her life. Well, she made a vow and she would repress it. Well, here’s the thing. Your body can only hold so much of those repressed emotions before they’ll just regurgitate on you. So before they do that and really take you to your knees, process them yourself. And so what I do is I always have a kid’s bad at all, either Nerf bat or a foam bat, and I’m going to do this, disclaimer, this is not for people.
Marla (17:35):
This is not for animals. This is strictly for soft material, like a sofa or a mattress. And what you do is when you’re, you know, you’re getting ready to do this, you take the bat and you go to your mattress to make sure there’s nothing around that you’re going to break. It’s very important. And you know, you focus on what you want to release. Was it, you know, the boyfriend or girlfriend that broke your heart or hurt you or cheated on you, or was it somebody else who might’ve cheated the business or in some other way, and you really angry or did somebody else, you know, do something to you that really hurt you, upset you, angered you, whatever it might be and picture the person, the situation, whatever you’re pushing down, and then just start swinging the bat and hitting your mattress. And I will tell you, within 60 seconds, you’re going to start feeling emotions, come up.
Marla (18:28):
And here’s the thing. Don’t repress them back down again, allow them to come up and out. If you need to cry, cry, if you need to scream, scream. That’s why I developed the screen pillow for people who live in small spaces with a lot of people around to muffle your screams. But let, whatever it is, come out. If you need to journal afterwards journal, but just process, process, process. And here’s the thing. It may it’ll feel, it never feels great to go through this, but it feels great afterwards. It’s almost like a really intense workout session. It’s hard. It hurts you push yourself. And then at the end of the workout session, you’re like, wow, I’m so glad I did this. I feel so much better. It has the same kind of effect when you release and then I’ll share. And then the next thing you know, my payoff and what I share is forgiveness, forgiving others, forgiving yourself. And so there are tech tips and techniques for doing that for learning self-acceptance and really ultimately finding that place of you can love yourself as I like to say, warts, wrinkles and all.
Katie (19:39):
Yes. So important. Thank you for sharing that. I think that’s so valuable and I’d love to hear about your podcast.
Marla (19:45):
Got it. Spirit conversations is every few weeks live every Thursday at noon, and it’s on voice america.com and we also stream it on Facebook and YouTube. And what I do is it’s an interview show and I bring the most amazing metaphysicians healers thought spiritual leaders to come and talk about their modalities, their process, or what they speak about to give the listener tips, tools, and techniques very much the way everything else goes in my life. I want to be there of service. So give them ways to help them shift their life experience. And then for the guests that I come on, I want to spotlight them. A lot of them are not as well known as the ones that are always in, you know, internationally known like Deepak Chopra or Marianne Williamson or Wayne Dyer used to be. These are very powerful people that some people know, but many don’t and I want to bring them out because of all that they do for their clients and how they can help,
Katie (20:53):
What a great mission. Yeah. That’s why I love having a podcast. You can give a voice to people that might not have that exposure and really share their, their mission and their message. And it’s so important. So I definitely want to tune into that. So that’s amazing. And do you have any resources out there that you’ve mentioned a bunch already, as well as your own resources, but anything else like books or podcasts or courses that you think the listeners to check out that would be helpful?
Marla (21:17):
I I’m, I’m even doing this book myself. It’s called the answer by John SRF. And it is amazing because it makes you look at building your business in a different kind of way, but it also includes the law of attraction, the science of manifestation and how manifesto, you know, th these steps allow you to visualize what it is you want to build and help you do this. I’m trying to think this, this book is right now, my, my top favorite. I love listening to other people’s business podcasts. I listen to a lot of them, so I don’t have anyone specific, but I do like inspirational people like the Nate Brown and,uGabby Bernstein, you know, people that also help the zero all working for the greater good of the individual for the, for the humanness of everyone to get them out of their own way.
Katie (22:15):
Yes, absolutely. And I’ll link to all those in the show notes as well. And I would love if you could share how somebody can connect with you.
Marla (22:22):
Well, you can look at me and find out all I do on my website, which is www Marla Goldberg and the Goldberg has got two RS. So it’s M a R L a G O L D B E R R g.com. And you’ll find links to my podcasts past and future all the media that I’ve done, uways to order my products, my books, umy brisk band, my pillow, my journal, and you’ll also be able to have links to the global consciousness summit as well as the global consciousness development circle.
Katie (23:04):
Perfect. Perfect. Well, thank you so much for coming on the show today and sharing all those valuable insights as well as your story. I so appreciate it. Thanks.
Marla (23:12):
Yeah, I am so grateful that you invited me on and I’ve had a great time.
