As human beings most of us want to do good in this world. We want to give back, we want to make a difference and we want to help others when we can. There are millions of amazing non profit organizations around the world that do all of those things and more. They champion causes, lift people up and generally make this world a better place. Along with all of the goo works they do, they are also running a business just like any other corporate company. They need funding, effective marketing and messaging that will reach those that will support them.
Kristi Porter saw this need when she started getting involved with anti sex trafficking organizations in Atlanta, Ga. She saw that non profits needed an effective way of getting their message out to their audience and saw how she could help.
In this episode, Kristi and I talk all about how to work with non profits and how it might differ form working with a traditional corporate company. We also discuss tons of great advice on how to solidify your messaging and improve your marketing that is great for non profit and for profit companies.
I was so inspired by Kristi’s giving spirit and knowledgeable insights into the marketing world and know you will be too so let’s jump in.
How To Transitioning From A Volunteer To A Paid Position Gracefully:
Asking for money can be an awkward topic for anyone. Non profit organizations have to raise funds for their causes and need generous donors to help continue their work. Sometimes a non profit are lucky enough to be surrounded by more than enough donors but more often, they have to petition for funds It can be uncomfortable and awkward to ask for money as a company and it certainly can be awkward to ask for money from that company. However, as I mentioned, non profits need services to run smoothly just like any other business and they are willing to pay of those services.
Kristin explained that the process of going from a volunteer or an unpaid worker to a paid one is a little bit of a different process within a non profit. Her first piece of advice…show up. Start out as a dedicated volunteer and prove that you care and that you are there to stay. Non profits don’t always have the funds to hire immediately so offer your services on a volunteer basis at first to show them that want to build a relationship, then once that relationship is established it will be a smoother transition to propose that you work for them as a paid employee, freelancer or contractor.
Adding Philanthropy Into Your Business Model:
If you are interested in adding philanthropy into your business model then you are a part of a growing trend. More and more people want to give back and are finding creative ways to do so. Kristin pointed out that you don’t have to be a huge multi million dollar company to make a difference. If you don’t have extra funds to donate, donate your time or services. Supporting causes with your time can be just as valuable as if you wrote a big check.
Guide To Successful Email Campaigns:
Social media feels like the most effective way to reach audiences these days, but Kristi pointe out that an email list can be even more successful. Email campaigns are sent to people who have already opted into what you are selling and so they are more likely to respond.
When you are trying to build your email list, make sure to always ask permission before you ads someone’s email. This way you won’t get into any trouble about capturing people’s info illegally. To create an effective email campaign, you should focus first on a compelling subject line the gets readers to open your email, followed by awesome content that serves a purpose. Don’t just send out emails because you feel like you have to. If that content isn’t serving anyone, then it will just come off as spammy.
Lastly, include a call to action so your readers know how they can interact with you. Some great examples are…”Visit my website” or “follow me on social media” or “Check out the sale on ________ on my website!”.
