Irene Tyndall knew from a young age that she was good at planning. She knew ever since she was 4 years old to be exact. A self-proclaimed “busy body” Irene, always knew she had the eye, the skills and the passion to design and plan amazing beautiful events. However, she never really knew she wanted to pursue entrepreneurship. After planning some events in college and getting a great job as a corporate planner, Irene was shocked when she was suddenly laid off.
This turn of events could be seen as a set back but Irene bulled up her bootstraps and at the urging of her family, decided to follow her own dreams and start her own business. When you listen to Irene talk about event planning and being a business owner, you will pick up right away on her fighting spirit, passion and above all joy in what she does.
Her contagious laugh and collection of hilarious stories makes it easy to see why her clients trust and love her. For those of you looking to get into event planning or if you just want to learn how to build a successful business and team around you, you won’t want to miss this episode.
Relationships Matter More Than You Realize:
When Irene was laid off and she decided to start her own business, she thought about taking it slow and flying under the radar until she felt completely ready. However, when a bride that knew her when she worked at her last job called her and asked her to plan her wedding…she knew it was time to jump in. The fact that Irene had always focused on and cultivated relationships throughout her past jobs, made all the difference when she went out on her own.
That bride remembered her and the relationship Irene had made with her and that helped her get her first client! No interaction, no conversation, and no relationship is too small or insignificant. Those are all chances to build a connection and plant your brand into the mind of that person.
If you give attention to each relationship then down the road that person will think of you when they are in need of the services you provide.
Create Systems Earlier Rather Than Later:
When you’re starting out, it’s easy to go straight for those fun and sexy things like your website and logo. However, Irene suggests that you start with getting those workflows and systems in place early on before you get too far into your business journey. If you don’t know what I mean by systems and workflows, think about what is taking up the most time in your business….is it responding to emails? Is it accounting and bookkeeping? Is it client reminders? These are things you can create workflows for and save a ton of time.
Create a series of templates for your most sent emails and instead of rewriting each email, copy and paste that template and then customize! If bookkeeping is taking up your time and energy, invest in an easy to use online accounting software that helps you stay more organized.
Simply find what’s taking away time for your business and find ways to automate or create a workflow so that you can move on from it and get back to work.
Learn To Work In Your Business & On Your Business:
Hold on…those things sound like the same thing, right? Well, not exactly. We all work IN our business every day. For example, we answer emails, provide services, take meetings and so on. Those things seem obvious and all necessary to make your business run. However, when we get bogged down and overwhelmed by all these day to day things we tend to forget how to work ON our business. Irene realized this and decided she needed to hire help so she could work IN her business and still have time to work ON her business.
Working on your business can be figuring out to grow and expand your business, networking and building new relationships, reasserting and expanding into new markets, etc.
So if you find yourself only having time to work IN your business then maybe it’s time to hire help or outsource so you can forcing ON your business as well
