Inspired by her Grandmother’s love of cooking and their relationships built over baking delicious cookies and cakes, Amanda took a leap of faith last October and left her job in law enforcement to open her own bakery. Now, I’m sure you’ve heard stores of people up and quitting their job one day and deciding to jump into their own business, but to be honest those stories are few a far between…and most of the time they are leaving out part of the story. Like most of us, Amanda knew she wanted to have a plan to make sure that this new venture would be successful and sustainable. I love Amanda’s story because she was so honest about what it truly takes to be brave and follow your dreams. It isn’t easy and it doesn’t happen overnight. Too often we hear about the highlight reels and the overnight success stories, but I think it’s so important to hear the FULL story of how entrepreneurs made it all happen.
If you’re wanting to work outside your home, but you’re not ready to purchase or rent your own space…try communal!
So, if you’ve been in the entrepreneurial world for any time, I’m sure you’ve heard of a communal workspace. There are tons of different kinds, from spaces you can rent for you and your team or simple public workspaces where anyone can come and work. It’s a great way to meet other entrepreneurs as well as get some much needed human interaction if you also work from home. Amanda knew that she didn’t want her home to be her workspace but she wasn’t ready to jump in and buy a space herself. So, she found a communal commercial kitchen that allowed her to have her own area with all the tools she needed to run her business. So, if you feel like you’re stuck in between working from home or renting space, try working communally as a great way to save money and meet other business owners!
You can be self taught and still run a successful business!
Say goodbye to the myth that you have to a master’s degree or a bunch of impressive certifications to build a successful business. That might have been true 30 or 40 years ago, however with the internet and the vast amount of resources at our fingertips, today, you can learn just about anything. Even better? You can learn just about anything and get really good at it if you put in the work and dedication! Amanda is a completely self-taught baker and understands that all you need is some talent, perseverance and a lot of hard work to master any craft.
No, you’re not the only one struggling with self confidence
As Amanda mentioned in the episode, business owners, especially female business owners, tend to constantly compare themselves to others around them. We doubt and criticize and ask ourselves “Why do I think I can do this?” I love Amanda’s approach to dealing with self-doubt…she told herself that she’s here for a reason and what better reason than to be happy and follow her passion. We’re obviously not put on this earth to suffer and be miserable. So…even if you doubt yourself, even if you worry you’re not good enough, if you’re following your dreams, if you’re happy while doing it and if you can keep learning and growing while you do that…then you must be on the right track.
