Naomi Sodomin is no stranger to adversity. In her book Embrace the Mirror, she shares the difficult life lessons and challenges of living in the inner city as a Native Haitian. Divorced at a young age, dealing with depression and being overweight are only a few of the difficulties that she used her impressive strength and passion to overcome. She experienced her own journey of emptiness, lack of fulfillment in her career, and absence of freedom to do the things that she wanted to do. When she gave birth to her son, she was working sixty-hours a week to live the lifestyle she desired. She quickly realized that her true ticket to financial freedom was to create a business around her passion, allowing her the flexibility to be a mom and a wife.
Today, Naomi is a Speaker, Trainer, and Coach, as well as an International Bestselling Author of the book, Embrace The Mirror. Her story is living proof that you can make a change at any time and create the life you have always wanted for yourself. Don’t forget to head over to embracethemirror.com and check out Naomi’s book as well as the awesome Facebook challenge that she mentions in the episode. I hope you enjoy!
Redefine who you are as a person instead of defining yourself by your job:
Naomi said that after working in the corporate world for so long when she was ready to leave she didn’t know who she was. Her identity had been so connected to that job that when it was no longer there, she was left feeling lost about how to move forward. Laying this foundation of working on yourself and your “why” is one of the best things you can do for yourself and your business. If you go into business not knowing who you are, you run the risk of just copying and imitating everyone else. Take the time to do the work on who you want to be, and that self-awareness will keep you on track throughout your journey.
Learn to follow up:
Naomi shared that one of the best skills that she learned from her previous job as a nurse was to follow up. As a nurse, if you give a patient medication or change something in their routine, you have to follow up to see what the effect was and what to do next. As a business owner, you should take following up with clients just as seriously. If you make it a priority to double back and touch base with them, then you will be making it clear to everyone that you are not just a one and done business owner but that you care about making that relationship a long term thing.
Nothing in life is a failure. It’s just a lesson you need to learn:
Failure can be a tough topic for a lot of people. We all fear it, and when it inevitably happens, it can derail our confidence and our motivation. Naomi believes that there isn’t anything in life that is a “failure.” Each experience that doesn’t turn out as planned can be viewed as a learning experience. We can take lessons from it and make adjustments in our life and our work that will help us do better next time.
