One thing that I love about entrepreneurship this day and age is that it is much more inclusive than it used to be. As more Millennials and Gen Zers enter the workforce, the persistent stereotype that we shy away from hard work is unraveling. We’re putting in long hours, taking on multiple jobs and because of tour high-tech and hyper-connected upbringing, we bring with us a new set of behaviors, expectations, and ideas.
Don’t believe me? According to a survey from Bentley University, 66 percent of Millennials want to start their own business, and Gen Z is projected to be even more entrepreneurial than that. I was so excited to chat with Lindsay because she is in a much different season of entrepreneurship than some of my other guests. She is still in college and is furthering her education while also working to grow her business.
While she is surrounded by extremely driven and creative individuals in her program, Lindsay’s life as a new business owner looks a bit different than the typical college student. For anyone out there who has been toying with the idea of starting a business but feels like they are too young or too inexperienced then here is you sign that that is only true if you believe it. You have unique gifts and experiences to bring to the table no matter your age and I am excited to see what Lindsay and all the other wonderfully ambitious young business owners out there do.
Know Your Ideal Client From The Beginning:
When you’re first starting out, it can be so tempting to just say yes to everything. You need the money, you need the experience and let’s face it, it’s just nice to have someone that wants to hire you. However, it’s much more beneficial to narrow down your idea of your ideal client as early as possible. That way, you will know what to say yes to and what to say no to and it will help you not feel so guilt about the no part. Trust your gut and don’t take projects that you know aren’t right for you. You will thank yourself down the road.
Know Your Audience and Target Them In Your Marketing Strategy:
Lindsay knew that she wanted her niche to be adventurous couples. So, she started specifically targeting areas and hashtags that she knew were relevant to those types of couples. For example, she knew that some of the cities around here were known for their hiking trails and outdoor activities, so she tagged those cities as well as hashtags of popular outdoor attractions. By targeting the interests of the couples she wanted to become her clients, she was able to tap into a very specific niche and reach her ideal audience!
