For this episode, I was so excited to chat with Morgan Kelley, the owner of Scarlett Events in Atlanta, Ga. Her focus is on creating events for women that love the elegance of simplicity and would rather live in the moment and create memories than stress about details. She was raised by parents that loved to host events in our home and when it was time for her to decide what I wanted to do with her life, it was almost a no-brainer. In this episode, we chat about how she balances both a service-based and product-based business, why she decided to outsource certain aspects of her business and why cultivating relationships with your vendors is so important to grow and build your business.
Know Your Strengths As Well As When To Outsource:
Morgan shared that social media was kind of a struggle for her. She doesn’t necessarily enjoy it and she knew that there was someone out there who could handle it and do it well for her. So instead of stressing herself out about it, she decided to outsource to an expert. We all have strengths in our business that we know we can do and do well. But there are also things that we know we are just plain bad at. So, to save yourself the time, the stress and the headache, consider outsourcing those tasks to someone who really knows what they are doing. in the end, it will make your business better and you will be much happier to get that task off your plate.
Building Strong Relationships With Your Vendors Helps Builds Your Business:
If you are in a business where you work with other vendors on a steady basis, it’s a good idea to start cultivating those relationships early. Having those connections in place will make your everyday operations run smoother but it also allows you to build a network of referrals. Morgan likes to send handwritten thank you notes to her vendors as a way to show her appreciation. She tries to remember details from conversations she has with her vendors so she can ask about it or follow up the next time she runs into them. Those small but important gestures really stand out to people and show that you value their work as well as your relationship with them.
What is “success” or “successful” for you? (From a Voyage ATL Interview with Morgan)
I define success by freedom of time. The ability to choose the hours I work, the clients I work with, the flexibility to choose where I am going to work (will I work by the pool today or will I plant myself at my local coffee shop?).
I am successful when I have the freedom of time to give back to my community. When I am able to make a difference in the lives of others via my contribution of time and or contribution of financial assistance.
For me, success equals fulfillment and happiness. I’m successful when my clients are happy and when their event surpasses all of their expectations. When the client is able to really sit back, relax, and enjoy the event. I’m successful when my clients choose to come back to me again and again for their event needs.
