At some point in time, you’re going to feel stuck. It happens to all of us and it can feel incredibly frustrating! However, there are a few tricks you can use to help you overcome writer’s block and get those creative juices flowing again. Here are my best tips on how to overcome writer’s block.
Tip 1: Freewrite
Sometimes we feel blocked because we are focusing on such a specific subject that our brains seize up on us. Try taking a deep breath and clearing your mind then literally start writing everything that pops into your head. It doesn’t have to make sense, it doesn’t have to sound good and defiantly don’t worry about grammar or spelling. This kind of free writing gets your mind moving again without having to worry about being “good”.
Tip 2: Do something else creative
This is my favorite piece of advice and it always works for me. If you are having major writer’s block then stop trying to write for a bit and work on something, anything, else that forces you to be creative. The could be cooking, reading, drawing, trying out some new makeup techniques, scrolling through Pinterest. All of these things are creative activities and will stimulate that creative bone. Once you’ve taken a little break, come back to what you were writing and see if you feel inspired.
Tip 3: Write out of order
This may seem crazy but structure can sometimes be the enemy of creativity. Who said we have to write something a specific way in a specific order? Maybe your high school English teacher did but this is your chance to break the rules! Write the ending first, start in the middle or simply write down ideas as they come. Don’t get bogged down by the idea that you have to write a certain way and simply let the ideas flow.
Tip 4: Try a writing prompt
If you are just completely stuck and have no idea where to start then google “writing prompts”. There are tons out there and even if you throw out 99% of them, there will be one that will spark an idea.
Tip 5: Create an outline or to-do list of what you want to create
Simply, can’t create anything right now? No worries, make an outline or a to-do list of what you do want to create. This will help you feel productive even when you can’t think of what you want to write right at that moment.
Tip 6: Try writing at a different time or in a different place
This is a classic and works for me almost every time. Feelings stuck when you try to write in the afternoon? Try writing in the morning instead. Still having trouble? Find a different place to work like a coffee shop or a park. New locations can sometimes spark new ideas.
Tip 7: Explore writing apps
If you are still struggling or having a hard time focusing, consider trying out one of these awesome writing apps!
